Vietnam leads the world’s fastest-recovering domestic aviation market

Vietnam’s domestic aviation market is the fastest recovering in the world among 25 top countries, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

In the latest analysis by Airbus and the IATA using statistics about the flight numbers from Flightdatar24 and Airbus, the Southeast Asian country’s aviation market is rebounding with a growth rate of 123% compared to the same period of pre-Covid-19.

On the IATA list, Vietnam is followed by Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Spain, Turkey and Australia. In Southeast Asia, Indonesia ranked eighth, Malaysia ninth, the Philippines 13th and Thailand 24th.

Dinh Viet Thang, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), said in the first six months of 2022, the number of domestic passengers and cargo volume increased strongly compared to the same period last year.

As many as 40.7 million passengers, including 1.8 million foreigners, arrived at airports across the country, up 56.8% and 904.6%, respectively. Meanwhile, Vietnamese airlines carried 20.1 million passengers, including 667,000 foreigners, a surge of 56.1% and 1,033%, respectively.

The CAAV forecast the number of air passengers in Vietnam would be 87.8 million this year, an increase of 190% against 2021. The numbers of foreign and domestic passengers are expected at 5 million and 82.8 million, in that order, up 844% and 178.4%.

Airports across the country would handle 1.5 million tons of goods in 2022, up  5% compared to 2021. Thang hoped that with such growth, Vietnam’s aviation market will soon return to pre-pandemic levels.
